2 Ways to Make Transitions in Oil Paint

Hello Reader,

Everyone painting in oil paint will run into a problem making transitions across form sooner or later. Below, I go over 2 ways make transitions and compare and contrast both methods.

1) Rub the two colors together

You bascially rub one wet color into another wet color where they both join and create a third color between the two.

2a) Mix each new color

Mix each new transition color separately on the palette. You mix a 3rd color between the 2 colors that you are trying to make a transition between.

2b) Place the new color between the two

You place the new 3rd color between the two that you started with. When done well, you create solid and smooth transitions.

For the best description of the process, watch our 4 minute video from class! This video was made in our Saturday Drawing and Painting Intensive which focuses on the portrait.
