Can high school students do great work?

Student Profile of Alex

Meet one of our successful high school students!

Alex has been a high school student studying with us for 3 Years. Though her time at this atelier is coming to an end, her art life has just begun! At 18 years old she’s already making stunning paintings! Let’s take a look at Alex’s works and learn more about the artist!

I would say that the piece “Still Growing” gave me the most issues as it's more of a creative piece that I have done and I didn't have a solid reference for the transition between the grass layer and underground. Because of this I had to kind of wing this part of the piece and I do believe that this area is one of the weaker parts of the piece.

Does this piece have an underlying meaning? What about the other two?

The piece “Old Man” is just a portrait study as I wanted more of a challenge painting aged skin. However the other two pieces have a deeper meaning as they are related to Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, in which “Still Growing” represents the growth that is needed to reach the final level of the hierarchy, self actualization.

While, “Validation” represents the esteem layer of the hierarchy and how academic validation plays a role in self-esteem.

When did your passion for art ignite? Was there a reason why?

I grew up doing art and crafts occasionally as a child, but didn’t start to take art more seriously until the pandemic hit. During this time I started to take classes online just as something to do to pass time and around that time enrolled in one of Bucks County Classical Arts Center classes that they offered at that time. As I got more invested into art, I decided to enroll in the atelier program in 2021-22 starting with pencil, then in 2022-23 I moved onto a grisaille palette, and now I am working with oils in color. I would say that since 2020 and through these 3 years at BCCAC, my ‘passion’ for art has grown compared to when I started.

How will you continue your education?

I am currently a senior in high school, and I plan on attending college after I graduate. I will be attending The School of Visual Arts and I will be majoring in illustration and be a part of their Honors Program.

What are your career goals?

I want to have some sort of commercial job within illustration. As of now I am more interested in editorial illustration, but I am open to other opportunities.

What help in class do you remember most?

I am grateful for all the knowledge I have learned as a student at BCCAC. Entering classes I really wanted to improve my skills and be a better artist, and through advice/guidance I have been able to reach these goals and am satisfied. It’s so bizarre looking back on the work I was doing at the start of my time here at BCCAC and comparing it to what I am making now, the improvement is crazy!

Having Alex as a student here at the Bucks County Classical Art Center has been amazing. We’re sad to see her go, but could not be happier with the work she has produced!
