This Friday outdoors — painting greens, and why they're harder than they look

This Friday: the problem with green

Hello Reader,

Spring is the hardest season to paint outdoors. Not because it's cold or the light is bad — because everything is green, and green is more complicated than it looks.

We're three sessions into Spring Plein Air, and this Friday we're staying with the posterization approach we introduced last week — simplifying what's in front of you into clear committed color masses — with a specific focus on reading and mixing the greens.

Here's the thing about spring green: it isn't one color. Standing in front of a tree line on a clear morning you're looking at warm yellow-greens in full sun, cool blue-greens in shadow, olive where the light filters through, gray-green on the older foliage. The eye reads it as "green" but the painter has to sort out what temperature each mass actually is and make a decision about it. That's the skill we're building this week.

You don't need to have been to the previous sessions. The exercise is self-contained and works at any level.

Spring Plein Air runs Fridays through May 22, 9am–noon. Drop in any session — $47/day.

See you Friday, John

PS we will be at: Peace Valley Park Galena Village

Great location on the other side of the lake from where we have been. Lots of overlaps, boats, trees, water and a great view of the other side of the lake!

Friday's plein-air session is cancelled We will find a make up time soon Hi all, I'm cancelling tomorrow's landscape session at Lake Nockamixon. Air quality is expected to be poor, and painting outdoors for hours in it isn't worth the risk to anyone's lungs. I know it's a disappointing way to lose a session, especially with the weather otherwise cooperating. We'll schedule a make up day once everyone can be there together, and I'll get that date to you as soon as it's set. Thanks for...
