Sharpen your skills and your pencils!

Different ways to sharpen your pencils

Hello Reader,

Getting accurate and realistic drawing requires doing things you maybe are familiar with, but at a higher level.

Pencil sharpening is one task that needs special attention for the serious artist and student.

I will mention general products below but I am not brand loyal. The suggestions are there to give you general options. They are easy enough to find via the internet.

3 Different Sharpeners

From left to right, there is a utility knife and sandpaper, in the middle a long point hand crank sharpener, on the right a long point hand sharpener.

Hand held

These long point hand held sharpeners are cheap and easy to use. They typically don't last long however.

Long point hand crank

These are relatively cheap, make a good point and last a while. I've tried electric ones as well but they seem to break or malfunction quicker.

Blade and sandpaper

By far the hardest to master, but you get the best result. You basically have to whittle an inch or more of open lead. Then you carefully sand it into a tapered point.
